Bagged Ryegrass Hay FAQs

Is Ryegrass Hay High in Protein?

+

Ryegrass hay isn’t that high in protein—especially when compared with other forage options such as alfalfa for instance. The amount of protein in ryegrass hay also depends a lot on the time of year it’s harvested. When harvested young, it tends to have higher levels of protein. Our bagged ryegrass hay typically contains 6-9% crude protein, which, along with moderate calories and fibre, makes it suitable for most working horses and ponies.

All of these qualities make ryegrass suitable for household pets, too. Head over to our sister site, HayDay for more information.

How Is Ryegrass Different from Meadow Hay?

+

Ryegrass hay isn’t the same as meadow hay. Meadow hay is a mixture of different grasses. This variability provides a more diverse range of nutritional and quality choices. Ryegrass hay, however, is made from harvested ryegrass. It’s known for being a high-quality, nutrient-dense forage.

How Should I Store Bagged Ryegrass Hay?

+

Our bagged ryegrass hay should be stored in a cool, dry place to make sure it keeps. If stored correctly, it will last up to 18 months. Too much moisture and heat can lead to mould and spoilage, and exposure to sunlight can degrade the nutritional value. Finally, you’ll want to keep it out of reach of any pests.

  • Louise B

“My horses love the Low Energy Haylage and it is going down well. The main reason I changed it was to stop my pony from coughing as she is very sensitive to any dust. She has stopped coughing now. Fabulous service by yourselves from initial contact to delivery and it is much appreciated!”

  • Leah C

“Very happy to have found your Low Energy Haylage, after my horses and I developed a bad cough from really dusty hay from a different supplier. Your haylage is absolutely dust free, much easier to handle and there is zero waste. I wish I had changed a lot earlier as it’s the best forage I’ve ever used in 40 plus years with horses”

  • Kim C

“High quality products, we have bought from M&T for a number of years. Good, friendly advice (we have an ex-race horse and a laminitis prone Cob). Highly recommend”
